“HAVE YOU seen Murphy this morning?”

Kallie looked up from her till and shook her head. “He didn’t come in.”

Joe looked upward. “Wonder if he’s okay?”

“I heard him stomp down the back stairs earlier. Sounded like he was in a hurry.”

“Hmm, he must have gotten up late,” Joe surmised. “I’m going to do some paperwork. Yell if you need anything.”

“Will do.”

Joe went to his office and shut the door behind him before flopping down in his chair. It surprised him how disappointed he was that he hadn’t gotten a chance to see Murphy this morning. Maybe he’d stop by the apartment later tonight and see how things were coming along.

Since Murphy had started working, Joe couldn’t tell if he was telling him the truth about being exhausted or if he was trying to avoid Joe. He had the sneaking feeling that it was the latter. Murphy was a great guy, and he certainly didn’t want there to be any enmity between them. They really needed to talk. A smile spread across his face when he remembered how it had gone the last time he’d planned on talking to Murphy. They had a hard time communicating but had no issues with physical stuff.

“If only the rest of life were that easy.” He sighed.

Joe spent the rest of the day fluttering around the café, his head only partially on work. Annoyingly, he couldn’t get Murphy out of his head long enough to concentrate on completing a task. He was simply going through the motions until Murphy returned to the apartment. Funny thing was, Joe wasn’t sure he could explain why he was having such difficulties. He and Murphy fucked and fought—not really a good foundation for any kind of true relationship, whether that meant one in the true sense of the word, or just a friendship. What surprised Joe the most was that he’d contemplated pursuing the former, however briefly. What did he really know about Murphy? He knew nothing of his family, his likes and dislikes, hopes, dreams. The only thing he did know was the man could be funny as hell, made Joe laugh easily. Also, he was extremely attractive and an exceptional lover. Beyond that….

“I got nothing.”

Joe tossed his pen on the desk and got to his feet. He hadn’t written a damn thing in over an hour. He could no longer even pretend to work. It was time he got his shit together and figured out what was going on. They seemed to talk the most when there was something other than their dicks to concentrate on. Food. A couple of large pizzas should be a good buffer. Joe glanced at the clock: it was nearly six. Almost dinnertime. He grabbed his wallet and headed out.

One large pepperoni pizza and another with the works in hand, Joe stood outside the apartment door and took a deep breath before knocking.

Murphy opened the door, and his eyes went wide. “Joe, hey. I wasn’t expecting… I mean—”

Joe held up the boxes. “I brought dinner.
